10 Best Tips for Slow Living

a road with the word slow written in white

Tired of the world whizzing by leaving you feeling like you have no control? We are constantly bombarded with messages telling us we need to be more productive, efficient, and successful. But what if the real key to achieving this is actually to slow down your pace?

Slow living is all the rage these days. It’s a movement that's gained popularity in a world that is all about being fast-paced and keeping you constantly on your toes. So what exactly is slow living? Slow living is about savouring the simple things in life, living in the present moment and appreciating both the good and bad around us. In short, it's about making time for what is truly important in our lives.

Living slowly is not about giving up on your goals, ambitions or zeal for life. It is actually about finding a balance that enables us to live a life that is full of meaning and purpose. It can also help us reduce our stress levels, improve our health and build stronger relationships with our loved ones.

Ready to make the conscious effort to slow down? Here are 10 tips you can incorporate into your life to help you get started.

Unplug from technology

Our phones, tablets, computers and TVs are wonderful devices that can keep us connected with one another. However, these tools are also a major source of distraction and time-wasting. Spend at least 2-3 hours a day in activities that have nothing to do with screens. This could be reading, spending time outdoors or even enjoying the company of your loved ones. It is especially important not to start your day by checking your phone as this can have a negative impact on your mood and well-being. Nobody actually enjoys being bombarded with notifications, emails, and social media updates the moment they open their eyes.

Declutter, declutter, declutter

Have you ever looked around at the mess in your room or home and felt suddenly overwhelmed and anxious? I hear you. Living in a cluttered space makes it very difficult to relax and feel at peace. Having too much stuff around causes a lack of focus, money wastage and even impacts your health. Instead, make it a point to get rid of anything you don't use or love, or need. My favourite quote is “A place for everything and everything in its place”. Creating a calm, clean and organized environment results in improved moods, boosts productivity, smarter financial decisions and even better health. Decluttering is a challenging task but it is definitely worth it in the end.

Simplify and guard your schedule

Guilty of overcommitting yourselves? This may be an unpopular opinion to some but I believe it is extremely important to learn to say no. By learning to say no more often and setting boundaries, you free up time for the things that are actually important to you. You end up avoiding commitments that you don't have time for or that you actually don't want to do (me, guilty!). Always protect your time and energy, and only commit or say yes to the things that are truly important in your life.

Take a break or take a short nap

Living in such a fast-paced world, we are always bouncing from one thing to another. Juggling work, family, and day-to-day life can often keep you busy and stressed out. Taking a break or taking a short nap, even if just for a few minutes, allows you to rest and recharge. Step outside for some fresh air or close your eyes for a 20-minute power nap. It can help you clear your head and come back to your work or tasks feeling refreshed and ready to focus.

Exercise regularly and get in shape

When we engage in physical activity, our bodies release endorphins, also known as the "feel-good" hormones, which contribute to our overall happiness and sense of well-being. Regular exercise can also help to improve your sleep quality, boost your concentration and reduce stress. When you give importance to getting in shape, your physical appearance will improve over time, resulting in an increase in confidence and self-esteem. At a minimum, aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week to enjoy the benefits it can bring into your life.

Practice mindful eating

Mindful eating is the practice of staying in the present moment while you are eating. When you eat, make sure to focus on your food, how it tastes and how it makes you feel. Eat slowly in a quiet place without your phone, TV or other distractions. Make sure to listen to your body and stop eating when you are full. This is a simple practice that can have a huge impact on your food choices, health, weight management and well-being.

Spend some time outdoors

When you spend time outdoors, you are exposed to fresh air and sunlight. This is great for your mood, mental health and even your creativity. Instead of constantly being surrounded by concrete walls, this change in scenery gives you a new perspective on the world around you while allowing you to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are many different ways to spend time outdoors. Go for a walk, hike, bike ride or just simply sit in your garden and enjoy the fresh air.

Spend time with your loved ones

The relationship we build and nurture throughout our years are some of the most important things in our lives. Spending more time with the people you love is a great way to strengthen the connection and create memories that last throughout your life. It is important to set aside distractions and enjoy your time in their company. Pay attention to the details of your time together, let them know how much they mean to you and always remember to express your gratitude that they are present in your life.

Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep

Sleep is essential for each and every one of us. Our bodies and mind need to recover from our daily activities. Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep allows the body to repair tissues, restore energy levels, and replenish cognitive resources, promoting overall well-being. When you get proper rest, you are more likely to experience improved energy levels, mental clarity, focus, and even emotional regulation. This means you will be ready for meaningful activities, build relationships, and appreciate life's simple pleasures.

Be present on your journey of slow living

Being fully present in the moment allows you to fully engage and appreciate the current experience. You end up getting more in touch with your thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations, allowing you to recognize and manage them better. Being present when interacting with others enables you to listen, empathize and respond sincerely. When being productive, immersing yourself in the moment allows you to focus your undivided attention on the task at hand, enabling you to complete your tasks efficiently and effectively. Most importantly, when on your own, being present provides you with the space for self-discovery, personal growth and self-improvement.

Conclusion

Embracing the principles of slow living can be a transformative journey. By adopting the 10 tips above, we can create room for what truly matters in our lives. May these tips be a catalyst for a life well lived - one that is rich, meaningful, and deeply gratifying and witness the transformation it brings for both you and the world around you.
